An AI mail client from Europe

With a word processor, hardly anyone cares where the maker sits. A mailbox is different, because nearly everything converges there: quotes, contracts, sick notes, bank statements, applications, disputes with suppliers. When an AI reads those texts in order to summarise them, the question of which data centre is not ideological but practical.

A second motive has joined it in recent years: dependency. Anyone who rests their workflow on a single non-European vendor has little room to move if that vendor’s prices, terms or availability change. For many businesses it has become a deliberate decision to keep at least part of the toolbox in Europe.

That is the whole chain, and it is deliberately short. The fewer intermediate stations, the less there is to explain.

A European model is not a free pass. It does not replace your own data protection assessment, it does not make the processing automatically lawful, and it does not grant a certification BoxBee does not hold. This is honest too: measured on raw model performance, the large US models are ahead on some tasks. For the tasks in a mailbox, meaning summarising, classifying and drafting replies in good German, French or English, the everyday difference is small. If you expect literary translation or complex programming help, this is the wrong place: that is not a mail client’s job.

A model developed in Europe is good at European languages in daily use. In Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium and along the borders that is no detail: a message arrives in French, the reply goes out in German, the attachment is in English.
