The daily brief answers the question you ask yourself every morning: what happened overnight, and which part of it actually concerns me today.
What is in it
The brief summarises the arrived messages in groups, names the matters where something moved, and pulls out the points where somebody is waiting for an answer or a decision from you. The appointments of the day that came out of mail are added.
Anything that is purely for information is condensed into one sentence at the end, so you can skim it and forget it.
What it is good for
It replaces the quarter hour you spend walking through the inbox in the morning just to know what is going on. That is not a glamorous win, but over a week it is more than an hour, and the start of the day is the wrong time to be counting lines.
Coming back from holiday you use it differently: then it summarises not the day but the stretch of time you missed.
